I don’t know how I have so much luck, but the last two schools I’ve taught at (both in the inner city) have beautiful gardens on land donated to the school! today was spring cleanup day, so I headed on down and worked on a lovely, hot sunny day. (then recovered with a mineral bath & facial!) here’s some snaps:

I saw tons of things I liked, but I’ll only show a few, as I’m sure it’s highly illegal. first off was this cool elizabeth murray piece. can you believe she was in her 60’s when she made this? how awesome:

then there was a rothko room! check out the website, if you keep reloading the main page, a photo of the room eventually shows up at the top. basically, it’s a small room with one canvas on each wall – so you can sit in the middle and be surrounded by rothko! truly a religious experience. oops, didn’t see the sign about staying two feet away from the artworks till later – so much texture to check out! they were just lucky I didn’t lick ‘em- yum!
then I saw an amazing variety of modern works. I really felt honored to see these works in person, and of course they are so much better that way than in some reproduction. here are a couple more that show up okay:

my trip to Maryland has been fun so far! I’ve spent lots of time with my friend Sharon and her family: we went to the Baltimore Aquarium on Monday, and have hung out around the house, watching movies, listening to the kids do their piano practice, checking homework, and eating, eating, eating! Sharon’s a great cook and as she knows my blood-sugar vagaries all too well, she makes sure I stay on a full tank! as it’s passover, we’ve eaten haroset, gefilte fish, matzoh ball soup (which Sharon makes with lots of veggies), matzoh kugel and even a matzoh lasagna!
Shar, as I call her to her eldest daughter’s bemusement, has to email me a copy of the pic we all took together in the Aquarium — then I’ll post it, but anyway, I can report that we saw all manner of rays, sharks, a tortoise, an electric eel, anemones (my fav), sea stars, etc, plus four dolphins performing at the dolphin show. it was lots of fun.
tonight, Shar & I got the night off (not that I’ve taken any responsibility with the kids beyond kissing them and listening to their piano) and went to get matching! manis and pedis. we found a great dark purple by OPI in their parisian collection, except Sharon had to get a lighter color on her hands as she’s active duty.
anyway, I’ll give a run-down of the cute lil’ darlings Shar has popped out the next time, as well as an update on all the fun DC happenings…..

I’m on vacation this week, so I’ll get a nice break from teaching. (I probably need to re-charge: I got a little note this week which read, “your the best teacher in the wolrd.” hmmm.)
I’m headed to “sin city,” Ellicot City on the Beltway. oh, no? not known as sin city? well, I’ll try to have fun anyway. I may even buy a camera and actually put pix on this mug. may.
I bought a book yesterday for my vacation – Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. needless to say, if you are a fan of both Jane Austin & zombies, this is a must-read. plus, I found out I can get my netflix sent to my friend’s house for one week. and I’ll bring my mc’puter to continue on my mp3 quest-just looked up a bunch of rancid. (YEAH!) so I think I’m all set in terms of entertainment!
see ya on the road!

I just wanted to tell you about my dinner! I ate at Muza Restaurant in Troy – I wish I found this place long ago, but it was in a part of town I’m sorry to say I had no idea existed.
anyway, they serve real european (polish) food: ie well-prepared, simple dishes – cutlets and sausages and some basic fish dishes- all to be served with some cabbage and potatoes or noodles on the side, of course!
I had the Vienna Schnitzel and it was absolutely delicious – of course!!! you could hear the chef pounding the hell out of the cutlets all the way to the second floor! damn tender!! everything was cooked properly and the ambience was, well… like a european restaurant. not “fancy-schmancy,” just thoughtfully laid out and unpretentious. very relaxing.
and you know it was authentic by the “polish vegetable salad:” a potato salad with some peas and carrot slices stuck in. yum! gotta love those eastern european “vegetables”- guaranteed to get you through a long winter!!
anyway, lots to tell you – will update tomorrow…..

a bunch of my family got together yesterday – in Albany (or Troy. whatever.) my sister and her kids came north from PA and our parents came south from VT, and they all met here! one of my nephews has his break this week, so they did a kind of meet-you-partway thing so he could go visit the grandparents. but the cool part is now halfway is my house!
us younger generations went swimming in the morning at the hotel, then we all met for brunch, then came back to my place and wandered all over the hay-fields… it was a gorgeous day! we went up the biggest field – I’ve always wondered how far it really was to the top (far) – and had a great view down over the hills and fields and woods and my little house waaay down below…..
bye

I’ve been thinking about getting mp3 downloads, but the apple store is a bitch, so I was just… “thinkin’ about” checking into amazon downloads – until, that is, I heard this song on wext – I downloaded that amazon software so fast, my head spun. (v easy to use, too!)
now I’ve got it on repeat!
UPDATE: uh-oh. I think I’m going to lose a lot of dough with this. and possibly any cultural credibility. I went on just to get a few tres chic Carla Bruni songs (I swear!) and suddenly I had downloaded a ton of Flo Rida and Fabolous songs… how did that happen?!? I guess I’ll know I’m really in trouble if I start downloading Warren G.
